Variant title in M.R. James: Letters of Sir H. Wotton.
165 letters, largely written by Henry Wotton to James VI and I, Sir Thomas Lake, or Sir Robert Naunton. Also includes letters addressed to the King from, for instance, the Senate of the city of Ulm. Includes a series of correspondence from Gregorio di Monti, an agent within the English embassy in Venice (See Calendar of State Papers relating to English affairs in the archives of Venice, vol. 1).
Some written in Wotton's own hand, especially if addressed to the King, but also written in other hands and undersigned by Wotton.
Many of the letters include their envelopes and accompanying seals. With endorsements on arriving in England.
Letters of Sir Henry Wotton edited by Logan Pearsall Smith were published by Oxford University Press in 1907.
Includes a tipped in letter from William Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch (as Earl of Dalkeith) dated 1833, addressed to the Provost. It speculates on the provenance of the letters, which were found amongst the papers of his mother, Charlotte Thynne, daughter of Sir Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath. She was descended from Sir Ralph Winwood, and they may have passed down this line.
