MS 233
Four sermons, one by John Hales. manuscript.
Eton?, England, between circa 1630 and circa 1720.
1 volume (83 leaves) : paper ; 16 x 11 cm.
Transcriptions of sermons by John Hales, Fellow of Eton from 1613 to 1650. They are on the following texts: Luke 16.25; 1 Corinthians 6.13; Galatians 6.7; Matthew 23.38.
Devised title.
The first sermon was printed in The Golden Remains of the ever memorable Mr. John Hales of Eton College (1659, ESTC R202306) but the three others do not appear and may not be by him. The first sermon is described in print as having been preached on Easter Day at Eton, whilst the manuscript gives Shrovetide.
Date of production inferred from script.
Final sermon is incomplete, the volume lacking its final pages. Several sheets in a different hand have been inserted at the end, but do not appear to be a continuation of the text.
Ruled in drypoint; underscorings in red; manicules and some marginal annotation.
The first sermon is paginated in ink; the following sermons are foliated.
Inscription on rear pastedown: Burnet Hood Edinburgh.
Contemporary stiff parchment case; three sewn bands; title written in ink on spine '--ins of Witchcraft', indicative of mislabelling or possibly of remboitage.
