The double spread of fols. 1 and 2 are illuminated with an illustration of the Crucifixion (fol. 1v) and of the arms of Don Luis de Mercado (fol. 2r). Both framed by grotesque decorations with putti and baskets of fruit.
Illuminated initials with arabesque decoration on blue and red grounds throughout text.
Sale catalogue entry (lot no. 216) pasted onto front pastedown mentions a large lead seal of Philip II of Spain; not found with the manuscript, 2018.
Booklabel of John Hely-Hutchinson of Chippenham Lodge, Ely on front flyleaf. According to the James interleaved catalogue, Eton MS 932, purchased by Hely-Hutchinson from Sotheby's in February 1948 through Maggs, and presented to Eton College Library in June 1954. The printed bookplate records that it was bequeathed to Eton College in March 1950.
Contemporary Spanish green brown calf; blind tooled concentric frames of decorative rolls, the first of heads in roundels; the second of foliage, and the third of military trophies; between the frames are gold tooled ornamends of lions, birds, shells, unicorns, and dogs; blind tooled double fillet hatching on spine, with gold tooled ornament in each compartment; four raised bands; gilt edges; red, yellow, green and white silk cords between fols. 21 and 22, and fols. 56 and 57; traces of blue ties at head, tail and edges.
