Memoirs of Francis ("Fra") Hugo Lindley Wood (later Meynell), at Eton 1893-98 (Walter Durnford's house), based on his memoirs written in the 1930s supplemented by letters to his wife, his diary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and other documents.

"Lt Col Francis Meynell was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery serving on the Western Front from 1915 to 1917, when he was badly wounded. On 1st July 1916, the first day of the Somme, he acted as liaison officer to General Shipley of the 139th Brigade of 46th Division, giving a vivid moment-by-moment description of the bombardment. ...
