Some of the machines are obviously inspired by the unpublished treatise on architecture of Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439--1501), cf. Ashburnham Codex 361 (Biblioteca Laurenziana, Florence) which was formerly owned and annotated by Leonardo da Vinci.
