Note

The first 10 leaves, and the 24th leaf, are written in one italic hand, which is neat and perhaps later than Henry St George's death in 1644.

Note

Leaf 11 is an engraved image of the arms of the esquires of Sir George Macartney (Edward Darell, Edward Miller, and Henry Pelham Davies.

Note

Leaves 12-23 are in a less tidy hand and browner ink. Which hand belongs to St George has not been verified.

Note

The first section of the manuscript describes the arms of surnames beginning with A. The second section lists surnames from A to L, and then the arms of different countries and regions.

Note

Inscription on fol. 1r: Phillipps MS 24582. According to the enclosed letter from ANL Munby, Phillipps purchased a large group of St. George's manuscripts from the London bookseller Boone in 1852. It appeared in the Phillipps sale at Sotheby's on 27 April 1903, lot 46.

Enclosure: letter from ANL Munby at King's College, Cambridge to Joseph Frederick Burrell, dated 9th February 1955, concerning the origin of this and another Phillipps manuscript in Burrell's collection.
