17th century bookplate of Eton College on title-page verso.
Late 16th or early 17th century dark brown calf over pasteboard, sewn on five alum-tawed supports; bound in England, possibly Oxford. On both covers, a blind-stamped centrepiece of arabesque design (114 x 78 mm.); outer border of blind triple fillets (thin-thick-thin) intersecting at corners; board edges tooled with a single blind fillet, head and tail nearest to spine possibly hatcheted (in Oxford style) but very worn. Spine with five raised bands, tooled aside with blind fillets, the same and head and tail; endbands of alternating blue and plain thread; later spine label (gilt titling over red morocco). Textblock trimmed and undecorated. Endpapers comprising two leaves or a single bifolium (pastedown and flyleaf; upper flyleaf missing) with wide paper stubs. Chain mark at tail end of fore-edge on upper cover.
