Place of production inferred from subject matter and language. Dates of production taken from title page and from the penultimate leaf, which is dated August 28 1760.
A transcription of several letters outlining a plan for studying history together with recommended titles organised by century and country. These are addressed to the Rev'd Dr B----d as 'Dear Sir'. These are followed by a separate letter in the same hand addressed to 'My Lord' offering a critical assessment of the plan, undersigned 'M.T.'. It has been assumed by previous owners of the manuscript that the original addressee was Dr Edward Barnard (1717-1781), Head Master and later Provost of Eton College.
Written in ink, possibly in a professional hand. Catchwords throughout.
5 blank leaves at the front, and 2 at the rear of the volume.
Two letters enclosed: One from C.H.K. Marten (1872-1948), vice-provost and later Provost of Eton College, addressed from Eton in 1944 and returning the letters to 'Tim'. The second a donation letter dated 1948, addressed to Marten as Provost from R.A. Austen-Leigh.
Armorial bookplate of Thomas Carter on front pastedown. Austen-Leigh, in his donation letter, suggests this is the Thomas Carter who was a Fellow of Eton College from 1829-1856.

Found to contain a note by Edward Barnard arranging votes for his position as lower master at Eton in 1754; transferred to the College Archives in October 2019.
Contemporary red morocco; gold tooled border of rococo decorative roll with gold tooled sprig stamps at each corner; gold tooled rococo decorative roll on spine with single fillet and small star tool; dark red, yellow and green marbled endpapers; gilt edges.
