MS 402
Twenty-six drawings in outline of pictures on ancient Greek vases. manuscript.
England, 1800s.
1 volume : paper ; 31 x 48 cm.
Title devised by cataloguer.
Place and date of production inferred from the provenance of the vases, and from the artistic style.
Drawn in pencil and over-inked.
Captions beneath the drawings have been trimmed off, but are sometimes partly visible. Some of the leaves have captions above the drawing giving the source, listed below.
Some, but not all the leaves have ink numbers on the top right corner. These are not in order, and the highest is 49, suggesting the drawings were once part of a larger collection and have been bound out of order.
Sources include both collections and printed publications: Aubin Millin's Galerie mythologique (Paris, 1811); the collection of Thomas Hollis; P.F. Hugue d'Hancarville and William Hamilton's Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities (Naples, 1766); G.B. Passeri's illustrations of vases in the Vatican library; J.J. Winckelmann's Monumenti antichi inediti (Rome, 1767).
