MS 8
On Psalms 1-100 [manuscript]
Title in M.R. James catalogue: Rob. Grosthed (Grossetete) in c. psalmos
Title in Ker, MMBL: R. Grosseteste, In Psalmos 1-100
England, 1400-1500.
1 v. : ill. ; 385 x 250 mm.
Written in Latin.
Secundo folio: et venit.
Material: membrane; Gregory's rule (FHHF).
Format: codex.
Written space: 260 x 155 mm.
Number of leaves: iii + 216 + iii.
Collation: 1-27⁸.
Quire and leaf signatures and catchwords: quires 1-19 lettered a-v; after this the scribe seems to have gone back to "a" and have written the quire letter after as well as before the leaf number (e.g. "f 2 f" on f. 194), but most signatures have been cut off. Catchwords.
Page preparation: ruled in plummet. No pricking visible.
Mise-en-page: double columns (52 lines) written in a halfway script. Red and blue paragraph signs. The incipit of each new section is in a larger script, taking up two lines. Marginal capital letters (A-G) used to improve text navigation.
Decoration: burnished gold initials (10 lines) on particoloured blue and purple ground (ff.1r, 1v). On f. 1r: two-sided frame of sprays tipped with green and gold ivy leaves. Blue initials with red pen flourishes extending along the text's column. Red and blue initials with pen flourishes.
Handwriting: northern littera textualis currens; one scribe has copied Grosseteste's commentary (1-203) and another the index (ff. 205-216). Gaps within the text appear throughout the first text, suggesting that the exemplar that the scribe was copying from was imperfect, or that they could not read it.
Correction: few omissions from the text, inserted in the margin by the main scribe.
Marginalia, later additions: an early modern hand added a "title" for this volume on f.1r.
Contents: ff. 1-203: Robert Grosseteste, In psalmos 1-100; f. 204: blank; ff. 205-226: index to the commentary.
