MS 25
Bible.
Biblia. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Biblia sacra
between ca. 1250 and ca. 1300.
1 volume (i, 498, i leaves) : parchment, ill. ; 33 x 24 cm.
A Bible with the usual contents in the usual order except that the Prayer of Manasses does not occur after 2 Chronicles; preceded by the 'Doctrina ad cognitionem correctionis biblie' (f. 1); and followed by the 'Interpretationes nominum' (ff. 458-497).
The order of the groups of books in the New Testament is Gospels, Epistles of Paul, Acts, Catholic Epistles, Apocalypse.
The layout is admirably contribed so that the end of Apocalpyse and the end of quire 38 coincide exactly.
The Psalms have running title 'David' (usually not present in Bibles).
The prologues are 60 of the common set of 64; see Ker for details.
Some underlines in red and there are superior letters in red above some words (those underlined usually 'h' or 'a'); these are explained in the near-contemporary additions on f. 1 and in a marginal note. See Ker for details.
Written space: 210 x 142 mm.
Layout: two columns of 49 lines (3 columns in the 'Interpretationes').
Collation: 1¹² + 1 leaf before 1 (f. 1) 2-41¹² 42⁵ (ff. 494-498).
Quires numbered at the end (but numbers mostly cropped) and catchwords.
Punctuation with the flex added throughout.
The initials of the books are illuminated and historiated or decorated; see descriptive list in M. R. James catalogue. Other initials in red or blue; capital letters in text filled in pale yellow.
Secundo folio (f. 3): astrologis.
18th century binding.
The script (including additions on f. 1) appears to be Italian and the decoration French.
Given by William Hetherington, fellow, in 1773.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.3.1.
