The first part of the Septuplum, a tract on the seven deadly sins, surrounded by the author's commentary; a copy at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, 282 (both parts), written in 1355, gives the date of composition as 1346.
The author is variously known as John de Athon, Ayton, or Acton and was Professor of Law at Cambridge University and Canon of Lincoln. See J. H. Layout: two columns of 57 lines (commentary).
Collation: 1-13⁸ 14 one (f. 105).
Text in large and commentary in fairly small textura, in an English hand, not good.
Some marginal annotations e.g. 'Nota bene contra religiosos' in red ink on f. 21v.
Blue initials with red ornamentation all in one size.
Decoration: continuous saw-pattern border in blue, red and green on f. 1.
Secundo folio, text: perhennis; commentary: me dominus.
Contemporary binding with chain and label markings suggesting the book was at Eton by ca. 1500.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.3.6.
