MS 34
Gregory, approximately 540 - 604 I, Pope
Gregorius, Homiliae in Ezekielem; Fasciculus morum. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Gregorii Homeiliae, etc.
England, between ca. 1425 and ca. 1475.
1 volume (i, 199, i leaves) : parchment ; 27 x 23 cm.
Two volumes bound as one, containing St Gregory the Great's Homilies on the prophet Ezekiel (ff. 1-103); the Fasciculus morum (ff. 104-191; also foliated 1-88); a tale and a sermon (f. 191rv; also foliated 88); and extracts from the Speculum laicorum (ff. 192-199v, ends imperfectly; also foliated 89-96).
The Fasciculus morum is sometimes attributed to Robert Silke; this and other copies are listed by A.G. Little, Studies in English Franciscan History, 1917, pp. 139-140.
The Fasciculus morum has scribal date 1443: 'Hic explicit liber qui vocatur Fasciculus morum scriptus per Wilellmum Gybbe capellanum parochie de Wysebech ... Anno domini Millesimo CCCCmo quadragesimo tercio.'
The tale and the sermon on f. 191rv each contain some English; the first (beginning 'Legitur in miraculo beate marie ...') is the only copy known, and is printed by S. Wenzel in Neuphilologische Mitteilungen 72 (1971), pp. 83-5.
Leaves 104-199 have a modern foliation of their own, ff. 1-96.
Written space: 210-225 x 140-155 mm.
The Homilies are written in two column and the rest of the MS in long lines; 33-53 lines.
Frame ruling from f. 27 where the hand changes.
Collation: 1-3⁸ 4⁶ + 1 leaf after 2 (f. 27) 5-10⁸ 11¹⁰ 12¹⁴ 13-24⁸ (ff. 104-199).
Quires 1-4 signed a-d and quires 13-24 signed +, a-l.
Written in several hands, varying much in size.
In the Homilies the script changes from fere-textura to (mainly) secretary at f. 27.
The Fasciculus morum, the tale and the sermon, and the extracts from the Speculum laicorum are in an untidy current anglicana, with some secretary forms mixed in; the hand of William Gybbe, also the scribe of Bodleian MS 152, Bodleian MS Rawl. poet. 118, and Vatican MS Ottoboni 334.
The Homilies have initials in blue with red ornament; the other items have initials in metallic red, and capital letters in the ink of the text marked with red.
Secundo folio: tus est.
Rebound at Eton around 1521.
The front pastedown and flyleaf (f. i) are the central bifolium of a quire in a hand of mainly secretary type of the second half of the 15th century, from a meditational piece in which a section numbered 133 begins 'Data est tibi o domine ihesu omnis potestas in celo et in terra'.
The final pastedown and flyleaf (f. 200) are parts of two bifolia in a current hand of mainly secretary type of the 15th century, apparently a commentary on Psalms 9 and 10.
Marginalia in the hand of Robert Elyot on f. 100v and a note in his hand on f. 103 that 'hec pars 2a gregorii super ezechielem corrigitur secundum librum M T Wich' i.e. Thomas Wyche, fellow of Oriel College, Oxford in 1435-36.
Many pointing hands in the margins of the Fasciculus morum.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.3.10.
