MS 41
Title
Homiliae in Evangelia. manuscript
Publication, distribution, etc.
France?, between ca. 1075 and ca. 1125.
Physical description
1 volume (ii, 210, iv leaves) : parchment ; 30.5 x 20.5 cm.
Note
93 homilies on the Gospel. The scribe seems to have been copying an incomplete copy of the homiliary of Haimo of Auxerre and then used other homiliaries to fill up gaps, but there are no homilies for Christmas, Easter or Pentecost.
Note
The homilies were numbered 1-92 in the 15th century, missing the homily after no. 79.
Note
There are no author's names except for no. 49 (f. 146) which is attributed to St Augustine.
Note
Six groups of homilies may be distinguished (I-VI), followed by a miscellaneous tail (VII). The component pieces are identified in Ker, as cited below.
Note
Group I (ff. 1-123): homilies 1-43 in the order of the church year from Advent to the 24th Sunday after Pentecost, but the occasion is only shown by the Gospel text. Nos. 1-40 are homilies of Haymo and 41-43 occur in the homily of Smaragdus.
Note
Group II (ff. 123-146): homilies 44-46 are homilies for Lent, all but 49 occurring in Smaragdus's Homiliary. Nos. 45-48 were added by the scribe on an inserted quire; notes in red on ff. 136v and 145 direct the reader to the last two leaves of no. 44.
Note
Groups III-VI are 37 homilies all found in a South German homiliary of which 7 manuscripts are listed in H. Barré, Les Homéliaires carolingiens de l'école d'Auxerre (Studi e Testi, 225, 1962), pp. 26-7.
Note
Group III (ff. 147-152v): homilies 50-53, for the 23rd to 26th Sundays after Pentecost.
Note
Group IV (ff. 152v-157v): homilies 54-57 for the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the week of Pentecost.
Note
Group V (ff. 158-176v): 13 homilies (no. 58-70) for the common of saints.
Note
Group VI (ff. 177-200v): a series of 17 homilies (no. 71-79, 79a, 80-86) headed on f. 177 'Incipiunt euangelia priuatis diebus in xl' for days between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. See Ker for details.
Note
Group VII (ff. 200-208v): six miscellaneous homilies including an additional one for Palm Sunday (no. 87). See Ker for details.
Note
Written on parchment of poor quality, with holes and tears avoided by the scribe; ff. iii-vi and 209-212 are medieval pastedowns and flyleaves.
Note
Two tables were added in the 15th century with the numbers as assigned, listing the homilies in their order here (ff. i-ii) and in the order of the church year, in four series (temporale, sanctorale, common of saints, octave of dedication). See Ker, p. 680 for details.
Note
Written space: 220 x 133 mm.
Note
32-37 long lines (less on the first few leaves).
Note
Ruling with a hard point: double vertical bounders, but the scribe wrote up to the outer of the two lines.
Note
Collation: 1-26⁸: leaves 4 and 5 of quire 26 are singletons.
Note
Quires numbered at end as far as 'XVI'.
Note
Written mainly by one poor hand with a distinctive wavy first limb of the letter 'y' (see f. 196 line 30, 'Ierosolymis').
Note
The 'I' of 'In illo tempore' beginning each homily is in red with red ornament, and lies outside the written space.
Note
Capital letters in the ink of the texxt touched with red or (ff. 89-109) pale yellow; both colours are on the capitals on ff. 108v-109.
Note
Secundo folio: et bene.
Note
Rebound at Eton around 1715.
Note
Written on the Continent (possibly France?) and to judge from marginalia still there in the 12th century.
Note
In England by the 15th century when the homilies were numbered and the tables and some annotations added.
Note
At Eton by 1500 on the basis of annotation by Robert Elyot.
Note
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.4.5.
