MS 47
Augustine, 354 - 430 Saint, Bishop of Hippo
Augustinus, etc. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Augustini Confessiones, etc.
England, between ca. 1425 and ca. 1475.
1 volume (i, 190 leaves) : parchment ; 30 x 20 cm.
A collection of writings by or attributed to St Augustine and by anti-Wycliffites written in the distinctive hand of John Malberthorp, fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, and later of Eton College; also includes extracts from J. Duns Scotus and St Thomas Aquinas.
The component pieces are identified in Ker, as cited in the references below.
Malberthorp's marginalia occur throughout, often in the form of exclamations, for example, 'o ecclesie olim continencia' (f. 153), 'o fallaces heretici' (f. 169v).
Many of the texts have letter-marks or chapter numbers in the margins.
The 11th item (ff. 169v-182) as enumerated by Ker, "Tabula elaborata super contenta in hoc libro", is an alphabetical table of contents of the first 10 items with reference letters corresponding to those used in the margins of some of those items, no doubt compiled by Malberthorp and similar to others found in his manuscripts at other repositories; including a longish hostile entry under 'Wicliff''.
Another list"'Contenta in hoc libro, sunt hec in ordine ..." signed "M' I. M'." is on f. 189v; f. 190rv is blank.
From f. 37 the foliation used by M. R. James as cited in the references below is 12 beyond that now in use.
Written space: 220 x 130 mm.
51 and 52 long lines.
Collation: 1-15¹² 16¹⁰.
The first leaf of quire 3 is signed b 1, so the series of quire marks probably began with +, not with a, as is not uncommon in English manuscripts, and comparably to quire markings found in manuscripts by Malberthorp in other repositories.
Script: modied textura: anglicana forms of d, f, and s; a mark of punctuation used within and at the end of sentences is shaped like a short comma.
Initials in gold on grounds of red and blue, patterned in white, with prolongations into the margins on ff. 1 and 39 (the beginning of the first two items in the volume); other initials are blue with red ornament.
Secundo folio: misit.
Rebound in the early 17th century; the binder took over two end-leaves of the medieval binding as pastedowns.
Final pastedown inscribed "Liber M' Iohannis Malberthorp".
See Ker as cited in the references below for the relationship between this manuscript and others now at Lincoln College, St John's College, Cambridge, Cambridge University Library, and the British Library.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.4.11.
