MS 48 (3)
Notulae in Bibliam. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Augustini quaedam
England, between ca. 1175 and ca. 1200.
1 volume (ff. 107-240 [i.e. 134 leaves]) : parchment (initials) ; 28 x 19.5 mm.
Leaves 107-240 in a composite volume of ff. iv, 240, ii, containing notes on Genesis, the Gospels, the Catholic Epistles, Jerome's prologue to Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Judges and Kings in thirteen parts.
The component parts are identified in Ker, as cited in the references below.
The notes on the four gospels have longish introductions (ff. 126rv, 155rv, 186-7v, 197v).
In the notes on Mark, there is a blank space on f. 135v after which the gloss begins again with the first words of Jerome's prologue: two notes beginning "Expliciunt..." are on ff. 139 and 142. The blank space on f. 135v contains an addition in a contemporary hand, "Statuit terminos moyses iuxta montem domini ...".
In the notes on Luke a fresh beginning follows a blank space on f. 156 and f. 159v was left blank because the parchment was too poor to write on.
The final part, on Kings (beginning f. 233v) continues the history of the Jews to the time of Christ, ending "Secundus patruus qui iacobum interfecit"; f. 240v is blank.
The margins of the first part (f. 107, "Notule super Genesin") contain sigla, M C, M G, M e R, M O , M.P.e, M.P.M. On their significance, see B. Smalley in Recherches de théologie ancienne et médiévale 7 (1935), pp. 256-9.
Written space: 212 x 145 mm.
Two columns of 45-50 lines.
Collation: 1⁸ 2⁸ wants 7,8, probably blank after f. 120 3-17⁸.
Probably all in one hand; Ker suggests the first part was written after the other twelve.
Initials in red or blue with ornament of the other colour: the terminals are sometimes small human or animal heads (ff. 155, 221) and the I on f. 197v is a delicate blue and red dragon.
Secundo folio (f. 108): fusione.
Bound with ff. 1-96 of the composite volume in the early 17th century and with ff. 97-106 then or earlier (but if so, bound first with it on the basis of rust marks from a former binding on f. 106v); wormholes on f. 107 and later leaves decrease in size and number.
Two late 13th/early 14th century inscriptions in red on f. 107: at head, "Liber beate marie de Beluero"; at foot, "Hunc librum dedit frater Willelmus de Beluero prior eiusdem ecclesie deo et beate Marie de Beluero quem qui alienauerit uel fraudam aliquam inde fecerit indignacionem dei incurrat. Anima dicti Willelmi et anime omnium fidelium deunctorum requiescant in pace amen".
Another 14th-century ex-libris on f. 145v, unread.
At Eton by 1601 on the evidence of the binding.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.4.12.
