Jacobus,, ca. 1229 - 1298 de Voragine
Jacobus de Voragine, Sermones dominicales. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Postilla Januensis · s · Januensis sermones dominicales
England, between ca. 1425 and ca. 1475.
1 volume (iii, 190, iv leaves) : parchment ; 26 x 18.2 cm.
Sermons, three for each Sunday, from Advent to the twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost (ff. 1-182) followed by a table (ff. 182v-190) referring to sermon numbers and subdivision of sermons by letters and numbers placed in the margins.
In the table, lettered subdivisions often employ numbers doubly, the leading number being placed in a circle or underlined for distinction; the stories in the sermons are listed at "Narracio" under 73 heads.
In sermon 7 (f. 6v) an interpolated passage "similiter Notyngam ... et Rabanus dicunt vt dicit Repingdon" comes presumably from the margin of the exemplar; this mislead a 15th-century reader who wrote in the margin "Hic nota quot Notyngam et repyngdon erant ante Ianuensis".
Another marginal note on f. 61: "Nota contra fratres pred[icatores]".
Leaf 190v was left blank.
15th-century additions on the flyleaves and on the blank page at the end: f. iii: extracts from De animalibus, De celo et mundo, etc. headed "secundum Aristotelem at alios philosophos in libro et tractatibus rerum precipue aristotelis"; f. iii verso: note on the twelve "effectus" of the eukarist, according to G. de Baysio on the Decretum, De consecratione, distinctio 2; f. iii verso, from "Paris' in opere 40li sermo 53" on Sapientia dei; f. 190v: from "Ianuensis in opere 40li dominica 4a sermo. Inuenit ihesus in templo vendentes ..."; ff. 191-2: a list of the pericopes of the sermons in the main text.
In the margin of the note on Sapientia dei on f. iii verso, a reader's note begins: "I loue better terrestria quam celestia ...".
Leaves iii, 191-2 are medieval parchment flyleaves.
Written space: ca. 192 x 130 mm (but less at first).
Two column sof 32-45 lines.
Frame ruling.
Collation: 1-13¹² 4-7⁸ 8-18¹⁰ 19⁸ , but quires 4-9 have a ninth leaf places in each of them after leaf 2 (ff. 39, 48, 57, 66).
Quires lettered from a in the usual late medieval manner.
Script: ff. 1-7 in a neat hand in which secretary predominates, and the rest in a mixture of current anglicana and secretary, mainly by one hand.
Initial in blue patterned in red on f. 1; red patterned in white on f. 182v; 3-line blue initials on ff. 1-7; and 2-line red initials.
Secundo folio: animam suam.
Listed in the college accounts for 1608-9 as one of 14 specified manuscripts bound by Williamson, but now in an 18th century binding.
16th century ownership inscriptions on ff. 1 and 192: "Pertinet ad M' Walterum Smyth" (see provenance note below).
At Eton by 1608-9.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.6.1.
