MS 77
Glosule Mathei. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Glossa super Mattheum
England, between ca. 1175 and ca. 1200.
1 volume (v, 86, v leaves) : parchment ; 23.5 x 17.2 cm.
Title from explicit.
A solid block of text with underlined lemmata including those of the two prologues, 'Matheus ex iudea' (f. 1v) and 'Matheus cum primus' (f. 2v); chapter numbers added in the upper margins in the 15th century.
Attributed to P. Comestor in Stegmüller (no. 6575).
Laaves iii-v and 87-89 are parchment endleaves taken over from an older binding; ff. iii and 89 were pastedowns, and ff. iv, v, 87-89 were taken from an early 13th-century copy of the Metaphysics of Aristotle in the 'old' translation (Aristoteles Latinus, no. 280), having a written space of 175 x 85 mm, in 48 closely written long lines with many side notes in a very small hand, and including the first two leaves of the text (ff. 87, 88). A section of text ends abruptly on f. v verso which is conjoint with blank f. iii suggesting these were abandoned leaves.
Written space: 190 x 130 mm.
Written on parchment of poor quality, with holes and splits.
45-46 long lines.
Pricks in both margins to guide ruling.
Collation: 1-10⁸ 11⁶.
Quires numbered at the end in pencil.
The 2-line space for an initial on f. 1 was not filled.
Secundo folio: quia hec duo.
Rebound at Eton ca. 1715.
Inscription on f. iii verso: "Liber quondam Magistri Nicholai Kempston" and "Liber quondam Magistri Nicholai Kem`p´ston' qui obiit anno domini 1477. numquam vendendus secundum voluntatem defuncti sed gratis et libere occupandus a sacerdotibus instructis in lege domini ad predicandum verbum dei successiue ab vno sacerdote ad alterum sacerdotem absque omni precio quamdiu durauerit. orate igitur pro anima eius."
Another, earlier inscription was read by M. R. James at the head of f. 1: 'Liber sancte [..........] Glose super matheum' and 'Liber sancte marie de [....]' followed probably by an anathema.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.6.4.
