Five pieces on the Epistles of Paul, now attributed to Petrus de Tarentasia (Pope Innocent V); cf. Stegmüller, Repertorium biblicum, nos. 6891-5.
Not ascribed here, but considered. as commonly, to be by Nicolas de Gorran in the Eton and St Albans inventories; see below.

At ch. 4 of the second piece (f. 46v) the scribe left space for an initial like those beginning the five pieces (ff. 1, 31, 51, 63 and 67).
Thick parchment.
Written space: 250 x 160 mm.
Two columns of 45 lines.
Collation: 1-5⁸ 6⁶ 7-8⁸ 9⁶ 10⁸ 11⁶ 12-16⁸ 17⁶ 18-19⁸ 20⁸ wants 7,8, blank.
Quires signed a-v.
The text of the Epistles is in larger and the commentary in smaller textura, but "g" is flat-topped and "s" may be round or kidney-shaped, probably by a foreign scribe working for Whethamstede.
Initial on f. 1 in gold and blue, with ornament in red and blue forming a border, at each corner a roundel, two of them containing a lamb and flag, and two sn eagle in white with gold halos on blue grounds; initials on ff. 1 and 68 in blue and red with ornament of both colours; other initials in blue with red ornament.
Secundo folio: edificacionem.

Probably written in England, probably by a foreign scribe working for John Whethamstede.
Ex-libris of the Benedictine abbey of St Albans on f. 150v: "Hunc librum ad usum Conuentus Mansterii sancti Albani assignauit venerabilis pater dompnus Iohannes Whethamstede olim Abbas Monasterii antedicti. vinculoque anathematis innodauit illos omnes qui aut titulum illius delere curauerint. aut ad usus applicare presumpserint alienos."

Formerly at the Benedictine abbey of St Albans: Number (8) in the list of books made for Whethamstede (abbot of St Albans 1420-1440, 1452-1465) printed in Annales J. Amundesham (R.S.), ii. 268: "Item in factura eiusdem super quasdem Epistolas Pauli 1s" (following two other books by Gorran).
Listed as item xv in the Eton inventory of 1465: "Item Goram vppon dyuers epistleles ii fo edificiacionem". See M. R. James in Etoniana, ser. 1, no. 28 (1921), p. 444.

Contemporary wooden boards, formerly covered with pink leather; eight bands; two clasps missing; formerly covered with a white chemise, of which a small fragment remained until 1964 when the boards were re-covered, preserving a piece of the pink leather now pasted inside the front cover.
