MS 106
Augustine, 354 - 430 Saint, Bishop of Hippo
Augustinus, De verbis Domini et Apostoli; etc. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Augustini sermones, etc.
France?, between ca. 1100 and ca. 1150.
1 volume (i, 139 leaves) : parchment, ill. (initials) ; 39 x 29 cm.
The content description follows the manuscript's foliation, as given below.
St Augustine's Sermones de uerbis domini et apostoli, comprising the 98 sermons found in Patrologia Latina v. 39 in another order (ff. 1-125), corresponding to nos. 1-37, 98, 38-97 in the list by P. Verbraken, 'La collection de sermons de Saint Augustin "De verbis domini et apostoli", Revue Bénédictine 77 (1967) 27-46, where this copy is recorded as being of "Type B 1". At the end is the couplet "En labor est finis ..." printed in M. R. James (who incorrectly transcribes the first word as "Est").
Followed by S. Augustini Vita (ff. 125v-130).
A table of the sermons (ff. 131-135v) was added in the 15th century, referring to the sermon numbers in the upper margin and to the letter references of the same date which subdivide each sermon. The 38th sermon is listed twice, as no. XXXVIII and again as no. XCIII.
Folios ii verso and iii recto contain the Regula of St Augustine; the recto of f. ii was left blank and contains a couplet beginning "Unde supperbimus ..." in a late 12th century hand, transcribed by M. R. James.
Folios iv-v verso are an addition in a hand of the second half of the 14th century, perhaps leaves out of another book, containing St Jerome, Sermo de omnipotentia in a hand.
The former pastedowns prior to the modern rebacking and ff. i, 136 are leaves from letter E of the Concordantiae maiores (Stiegmüller, no. 3605), written in England in the second half of the 14th century. 24 more or less complete leaves and 4 strips survive in this form as used by Williamson in 1600-1601 and other years in binding 9 manuscripts and 2 printed books at Eton. These may correspond to the 'concordaunce of ii partes' listed in the Eton inventory of 1465. In this volume, f. i contains "Effeminatus-Egestas", f. 136 contains "Eleuans-Emaus", the front pastedown contains "Eruditor-Eramentum" (exposed side) and the back pastedown contains "Emanuel-Emortuus" (exposed side). See Ker, p. 635 and Etoniana, ser. 1, no. 28 (1921), p. 443.
The lower part of f. 64 was left blank before the change of hand.
On f. 115v, 18½ lines of text were crossed through because the ink took badly and recopied; f. 117v was left partly blank by the scribe mistrusting his parchment.
Written space: ca. 310 x 236 mm.
Written in two columns of 47 lines.
Ruling with a hard point.
Foliation: i-v, 1-136.
Collation: 1² (ff. ii, iii) 2 two (ff. iv, v) 3-16⁸ 17⁶ +1 leaf after 2 (f. 115) 18⁸ 19 three (ff. 128-130) 20⁶ wants 6, blank.
Quires 3-19 numbered I-XVII at the end (quires 3-9) or at the beginning (quires 11-19).
Probably three hands, changing at ff. 57 (10¹) and 65 (11¹) where there is an inexact join, suggesting simultaneous writing by two scribes.
Initials in outline edged with red and green on coloured grounds decorated with green and white circling branches of ff. 1v and 125v, the former with a dragon head at each end of the C; other three-line initials in red with ornament of the same colour.
Secundo folio: esse maliuolos (f. iii); tis sue (f. 2).
Rebound at Eton in the early 17th century.
Probably written in France, or possibly Italy (cf. Verbraken).
The addition of St Jerome and the table are later and English, as are marginalia to the main text.
Two-line erasure and "xxxviius" on f. 130v, probably 14th century.
Table of contents like those in William Horman's books, headed "Contenta", and inscription of gift (to Eton) "Donum M' Ioannis Moyer" on f. iii verso, late 15th/early 16th century.
One of four books bequeathed to Eton by John Mocer9.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bl.2.5.
