MS 107
Augustine, 354 - 430 Saint, Bishop of Hippo
[De civitate Dei]
Augustinus, De civitate Dei. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Augustinus de civitate Dei
England, between ca. 1200 and ca. 1225.
1 volume (i, 230 leaves) : parchment, ill. (initials) ; 40 x 26.5 cm.
St Augustine's De civitate Dei preceded by tables of chapters of books 11-22 ending with book 22 chapter 29, the chapter numbers added later.
In books 1-10 the paragraphing does not agree with the chapter numbers added in the margins in the ?14th century: for example book 1 is in 27 chapters but is marked for 39 chapters.
Books 11-22 have an inconspicuous early (but not original) chapter numbering in roman numerals and a later one in the margins in large arabic numerals, which does not always agree with the earlier numbering.
Folio i is a bifolium of a mid 15th-century theological manuscript written in 2 columns of ca. 43 lines in frame ruling, in an English secretary hand (cf. also ECL MSS 32 and 34); one leaf is numberd 43.
Folios 229v-230v were left blank; 230v is pasted down.
Written space: 280 x 180 mm.
Two columns of 46 lines.
Pricks in both margins to guide ruling.
Collation: 1-11¹⁰ 12¹² 13-20¹⁰ 21-22¹² 23⁴ (4 = f. 230, pasted down).
Quires 1-5 are numbered at the end.
A new hand begins at f. 46v and the ruling changes at the next new quire (f. 51) from three vertical lines between the columns to two vertical lines between the columns.
9-line inhabited initial in red on gold and pink on f. 6: Augustine vested as a bishop, writing at a desk.
Other decorative initials in red and/or blue, some with ornament of one or both colours; initial of book 7 in red on a ground of decorated brown and blue; initials of books 19-22 are unfinished.
Secundo folio: naturali pondere.
Rebound at Eton around 1520.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bl.2.6.
