Theodulus, etc. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Theodulus, Maximianus, etc.
Bari?, Italy, between ca. 1000 and ca. 1100.
1 volume (iv, 81, iv leaves) : parchment, initials ; 22.7 x 16.5 cm.
A late Latin collection of poetry: [1] Theodulus, Ecloga, lines 23-344 (begins imperfectly) (ff. 1-6v) ; [2] Maximianus, Elegiae (ff. 6v-18v) ; [3] Statius, Achilleis (ff. 18v-37v) ; [4] Ovid, Remedia amoris (ff. 37v-52) ; [5] Ovid, Heroides, book 1, line 7 - book 7, line 159 (ff. 52-70v) ; [6] Arator, Historia apostolica, ending at book 1, line 521 (ff. 70v-81).
[1] A dialogue in hexameters between Pseustis and Alethia, with Fronesis as umpire; the initials of the interlocutors are placed at the end of the lines throughout. Collated as δ [delta] by J. Osternacher, 1902, with reduced facsimile of f. 1.
[2] Formerly attributed to Cornelius Gallus according to M. R. James; collated as A by Bährens, Poetae Latini minores, v. 5 (1883), pp. 316-348.
[3] Collated as E by H. W. Garod, 1906; f. 18v reproduced in New Palaegraphical Society, 1, 110.
[4] Collated as E by F. W. Linz, 1965; cf. pp. xviii-xx.
[5] Collated as E by H. Dörrie, 1971.
[6] Collated as N by A. P. MacKinlay, Corpus scriptorum ecclesiasticorum Latinorum 72 (1961).
All but the first work have interlinear glosses in the same hand as the texts.
Between the first and second work (f. 6v), "BAXLE DAMA IACN USNANSA" has been interpreted as "ABEL ADAM CAIN SUSANNA"; the "E" above the last word may be a mistake for "F" as the initial of Fronesis.
Some of the parchment is defective, for example ff. 20, 79.
Written space: ca. 177 x 110 mm.
29 long lines.
Collation: 1 one 2-11⁸: 3 and 6 in quires 7-9 are half sheets.
Beneventan script; ff. 74 to 80, line 16 in a better hand than the rest; see E. A. Lowe, The Beneventan script, 1914, p. 338.
Initials in the ink of the text: 3-5 line initials in an elaborate outline on ff. 6v, 18v and 52, other 2-line initials.
Secundo folio not recorded by Ker.
Rebound at Eton around 1720.
Written in southern Italy, the script is of the Bari type.
17th century inscription on f. 6v opposite the first line of Maximianus: "Hoc item in alio Codice peruetusto paruulo".
Former Eton shelfmark: Bl.6.5.
