MS 122
Eustratius Metropolitan of Nicaea.
Eustrathius (et al.), In Ethica Aristotelis. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Aristotelis Ethica Nicomachea cum commentario Eustathii
England, between ca. 1275 and ca. 1300.
1 volume (ii, 223, ii leaves) : parchment ; 33.5 x 23 cm.
Robert Grosseteste's translation of the Ethics and of the commentaries on it by Eustrathius, Michael of Ephesus, Aspasius, and others.
Books 1-4 are printed in The Greek commentaries on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle in the translation of Robert Grosseteste, 1 (Corpus Latinum Commentariorum in Aristotelem Graecorum, VI, 1), Leiden, 1973. Books 8-9 are printed in Verhandelingenvan de koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Weetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten van Belgie, Klasse der Letteren, no. 45 (1963). The editor of books 8-9, W. Stinissen, listed this copy, and the editor of books 1-4, H. P. F. Mercken, collated it as E and noted that it is one of the best.
The 'Enarracio ephesii domini Michaelis' on book 5 begins at f. 82, following a commentary which ends imperfectly on f. 81v, near the end, 'ut intemperato est videre'.
Folio 221v is blank.
No divisions within the 10 books, except by later chapter numbers and sub-divisions of chapters by letters in the margin, and in some books, divisions by numbers (e.g. book 1 is divided into 139 sections).
Many pages have marginal scholia in neat, late 13th-century current anglicana, some beginning 'Ordina sic' (e.g. f. 101). Several of these are noted in Ker as cited in the references below, including some headed 'Linc' '. One against a passage on f. 41v (book 3.2), 'Hoc creditur esse dictum Lync', is in a later hand. Cf. Dunbabin in Traditio, vo. 28 (1972), pp. 467-72.
Foliation: (i, ii), 1-122, 122*, 123-203, 203*, 204-221, (222, 223).
Written space: 242 x 255 mm.
Two columns of 50 lines.
Collation: 1-6¹² 7¹⁰ wants 10 after f. 81 8-18¹² 19 ten.

Secundo folio: est hominis.
Rebound at Eton in the early 17th century.
Written in England.
Erased early inscription with only the last letter legible (a capital A standing by itself) at the foot of f. 1, in a form suggesting the book may be from a Franciscan convent.

Former Eton shelfmark: Bl.3.8.
