1 volume (v, 265, 5 leaves) : parchment, initials ; 34.3 x 24.3 cm.

Comprises the seven texts forming an Ars Medicinae which circulated together in the Middle Ages and were printed as Articella, ca. 1476 (Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendruck, 2678) and later.

Note

Four of the texts ([4]-[7]) are accompanied here by commentaries; cf. the similar 'Articella' manuscript in the Wellcome Library.

Note

The texts are: [1] Johannitius, Isagoge (ff. 1-7) ; [2] Philaretus, De pulsibus (ff. 7v-9) ; Theophilus, De urinis (ff. 9v-14) ; [4] Hippocrates, Aphorismi, in seven 'particulae', in the translation of Constantinus Africanus, with Galen's commentary (ff. 16-80) ; [5] Hippocrates, Prognostica, with Galen's commentary, in the translation of Gerard of Cremona (ff. 81-125) ; [6] Hippocrates, Regimen acutarum, with Galen's commentary (ff. 126-175) ; Galen, Ars parva, with commentary of Hali Abnrudianus (ff. 176-265v).

Note

Note

A piece of the text in text [4] was left out on f. 79 and added on f. 80 in a slightly later hand.

Note

Medical notes and verses on the flyleaves (ff. iii-v verso, ff. 266v-276) and in a blank space at the end of the text of Theophilus (ff. 14v-15), in two 14th-century English hands. These include a medical dictionary, A-E on ff. iii verso-v verso and ff. 14v-15 with references to authorities including 'Parysiensis', 'Petrus de yspania', Avicenna, Isidore, Averroes, Ysaac, Gilbertus, Gerardus, Cardinalis. See Ker as cited in the references below for identification of the texts.

Note

Fairly numerous marginalia, some of them in the same 14th-century hand that added the medical dictionary; some of the other marginalia are earlier.

Note

Folios iii-v, 266-268 are medieval flyleaves.

Note

The medieval foliation of ff. iii-v, 1-268 '1-18', '22-131', 133-275', followed in M. R. James's catalogue as cited in the references below, takes into account the blank leaves now missing after ff. 15 and 125, as well as the six old flyleaves.

Note

Written space: 207-145 mm.

Note

Written in two columns, of 35 lines in the first three texts, and of 21 lines (text) and 42 lines (commentary) in the other four.
