A political alphabet, for the use and instruction of juvenile politicians.
[London] : Birt, printer, 39, Great St. Andrew Street, Seven Dials, Londnn [sic], [ca. 1842-1846]
15, [1] p. : [1] wdcut ill. ; 10 cm. (16mo)
Anonymous; attributed to James Catnach.
First published in 1841.
Approximate date of publication inferred from textual amendment in this edition: the first quatrain on Prince Albert here refers to 'two little maidens and two little boys' rather than 'one little maiden and one little boy', suggesting it was revised following the birth of Princess Alice in 1843 and Prince Alfred in 1844, but before the birth of Princess Helena in 1846.
Includes quatrains on Prince Albert, Richard Cobden, Charles Pelham Villiers, Robert Peel, Sir Robert Inglis, Daniel O'Connell, the Duke of Wellington and Queen Victoria.
Title printed in ornamental and regular types; large initials for each alphabet entry.
One woodcut illustration on final page.
Apparently an early edition issued under [Thomas] Birt's imprint, probably printed by Mary Birt, his widow who is believed to have continued the business after his death in 1841 until 1851.
Original yellow wrappers, upper wrapper printed in black with ornamental woodcut borer and letterpress title printed in a variety of types.
From the library of Stephen John Keynes, with annotation in his hand on loosely inserted clipping of bookseller's description from (?) Maggs Bros, catalogue 1025 (March 1982), item 18.
