Title in M. R. James catalogue: Roberti Crikeladensis prioris Oxoniensis excerpta ex Plinii Historia naturali
England, ca. 1150-ca. 1200.
1 volume (ii, 165, v leaves) : parchment, initials ; 29.5 x 20.5 cm.
Robert of Cricklade's excerpts from the Natural history of Pliny in nine books, preceded by the relevant extract from Suetonius (cf. Teubner ed., 1898, pp. 300-301). See Ker as cited below for the folio numbers of each book.
A later, 14th-century hand has noted where each book of Pliny begins 'in mangno volumine': 'li. 26' on f. 147v, where book 8 begins, is the latest note of this kind.
The last chapter but one is on stones, ending 'imagines deorum' (cf. book 37 of Pliny, near the end) and the last of all two sentences 'De adulteratione gemmarum'.
Robert's scholia in the margins, referred to in his preface, are at first in a small script by the main hand and from f. 46 in a hand of the late 12th/early 13th century; there are none after f. 63.
Folios 165-167 are medieval endleaves and f. 167v was pasted to a former binding.
Written space: 205 x 130 mm.
Two columns of 69 lines.
Collation: 1-20⁸ 21⁴.
Quires 1-8 are numbered at the end and quires 1-9 have catchwords.
