MS 170
Pharetra sacramenti. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Pharetra sacramenti, contra Lollardos
England, between ca. 1400 and ca. 1450.
1 volume (iv, 130, vi leaves) : parchment, initials ; 18.7 x 11.5 cm.
Anti-Lollard tract on the sacraments in two parts, each of three "particulae"; other copies are at Cambridge University Library, Ff.6.44 ff. 57-133 and Lambeth Palace, MS 392, ff. 59-111.
Part I ends "Explicit tractatus de sacramento eukaristie" (f. 68v); its third particula (ff. 36-68v) consists of 48 "miracula" in four sets of 12: no. 7 of the fourth set happened in the church of St Mary Magdalene "in suburbio Oxonie" on St James's Day, 1262.
Part II begins "Incipit tractatus de sacramento penitencie" (f. 68v); its third particula consists of miracles taken mainly from "Cesarius" (of Heisterbach), and a few beginning "Refert gerardus barri" (i.e. Giraldus Cambrensis).
Annotations on the medieval binding leaves: ff. iii, iv contain 14th-century current anglicana containing notes on optics (burning-glasses).
Annotations on the medieval binding leaves: ff. 132v-133 contain the latter part of a Franciscan letter of fraternity dated from Boston "circa festum natiuitatis Beate Marie Virginis", 1372
Written below the letter of fraternity on ff. 132v-133, the other way up, is (?) a conveyance of messuage "cum duobus croftis" dated from "Leek in festo sancti Michaelis", in a current anglicana of the second half of the 14th century; the outside of this sheet of folded parchment (ff. 132r, 133v) contains fragments of a theological text in English of the second half of the 14th century, written in a similar hand.
See Ker as cited in the references below for further details and a partial transcriptions of the annotations.
Ff. iii, iv, 131. 132, 133, 134 are medieval binding leaves; ff. 131 and 134 were a blank flyleaf and pastedown.

22 to 26 long lines.
Ruling with pencil.
