MS 171
Nicolas, 1232 - ca. 1295 de Gorran
N. de Gorran, Fundamentum aureum. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: Nic. Gorrami Themata
England, between ca. 1275 and ca. 1325.
1 volume (iv, 266, iii leaves) : parchment, initials ; 17.3 x 11.8 cm.
Sermons of the temporale, sanctorale, common of saints and for Lent by Nicholas de Gorran, printed in 1509 and later as Fundamentum aureum. See J. B. Schneyer, Wegweiser zu lateinischen Predigtreihen des Mittelalters (Munich 1965), pp. 318, 330, 546, 121.
Three leaves are missing after f. 2; ff. 116v-117v are blank.
Ker notes that the order of sermons here differs at two points from the 1620 Antwerp edition: after f. 77 where a temporale series ends at the 25th Sunday after Pentecost, and after the common of saints. With three exceptions the sermons on ff. 77-116 and 245-259v are found in the edition; see Ker for a table setting out the foliation and pagination.
The three sermons not in the printed edition are De cruce, ff. 98-99; see Ker as cited in the references below for details.
Some sermons are cues only, as in the printed edition, but the references here make no sense e.g. f. 228v 'Domine in uoluntate ... supra viii', this sermon being on f. 122v.
Low down in the margin of f. 68 is written 'xix pª' suggesting some connection with manuscripts copied on the pecia system.
Index on ff. 260-266v with references to this manuscript, ends imperfectly.
Leaves iii, iv, 267 are medieval endleaves; 267v was pasted down.
Medieval foliation on ff. 1-259: 1, 2, 6-262, taking account of three leaves now missing in quire 1.
On ff. 1-8 the columns on the rectos are lettered a, b and those on the versos, c, d.
Written space: ca. 125 x 82 mm.
Two columns of 36 lines.
Collation: 1¹² wants 3-5 after f. 2 3-14¹² 15¹⁰ 16-22¹² 23¹⁰ wants 8-10.
Signatures ad hoc when they occur.
Initials: on f. 1, 6-line in red and blue with ornament of both colours; other initials are 2-line, blue with red ornament or red with blue-green ornament.
Secundo folio: sum est cecum.
Rebound at Eton around 1720 by Slatter.
Once chained: chain marks visible at the foot of f. iii and as far as f. 4.
Written in England.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bl.6.26.
