Portolan atlas of three charts by Vicko Dimitrije Volčić [Vincentius Demetrius Voltius Ragusanus], of Dubrovnik.
Charts on parchment, laid down on insides of the pasteboard covers and on two leaves of pasteboard within them, each occupying two pages (one opening), very neatly drawn and lettered, with rhumb lines.
[1] Chart of western Europe (British Isles, France, Spain) and the northwest coast of Africa with Madeira and the Canaries; the southernmost name on the coast is "G. de Cauallos" in red. Names throughout are confined to the coastline, mainland names on the land side.
[1] In upper right corner is a painting in a frame of Christ in red robe, over blue, half length, holding orb and blessing.
[1] Three neatly painted figures of kings of France, Spain and Algeria, captioned: "Recs Francorum", "Rex Ispaniarum", "Recs Algerii".
[1] Near the painting of Christ is a wind-rose lettered S O L P M T CT +, the north indicated by a fleur de lys projecting to the right; another rose differently coloured low down on the left, and a third, smaller, low down on the right.
[2] Chart of eastern Europe (Italy, Dalmatia, Albania) with the Mediterranean and Adriatic and the northeast coast of Africa.
[2] Three wind-roses as before, and two figures of king of Tripoli and emperor: "Recs Tripoli", "Imperator".
[3] Chart of Greece, the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, with Asia Minor, Palestine and Egypt.
[3] One wind-rose lettered "Demonstra michi vias tuas", and three figures of kings of Russia and Egypt, and emperor of the Turks: "Recs Russie", "Imperator Turcorum", "Recs Egiptii".
Each chart measures ca. 49 x ca. 36 cm.
Original leather binding.
Made in Naples; first chart is signed bottom left: "Vincentius Demetrius Voltius Ragusa[nus] fecit in ciuitate Neapoli die 16 septembrii 1593".
Inscribed at the bottom of the first chart in a 17th/18th century hand: "Del Co[nte] Alessandro del Testa".
Curatorial note in hand of Patrick Strong (College Archivist) in the interleaved, annotated copy of M. R. James's Descriptive catalogue at ECL (MS 932) cites an undated letter from James to FWW-C (Francis Warre-Cornish) inserted at end of copy C of James's Descriptive catalogue as evidence, suggesting this was given with other MSS given by Major W. J. Myers in 1896.
