MS 219

Title

Fragmenta. manuscript

Publication, distribution, etc.

England or France, between ca. 1275 and ca. 1500.

Physical description

1 volume (122 p.) : parchment.

Note

Collection of manuscript fragments.

Note

Leaves of manuscripts were used as covers of the 'rough copies' of the annual college accounts from some years of the 16th century and most years from 1598 to 1648. These old covers were preserved when this series of accounts was rebound in white vellum in the 18th century. In 1920 the smaller ones were put together in a bound volume (MS 219) and the larger ones were put loose in a portfolio (MS 221).

Note

Sixteen different manuscripts were used, numbered by Ker I-XVIII. From 1609 if not earlier, they were often leaves of manuscripts from College Library.

Note

47 of the 49 pieces in these two volumes have the date of the account on them. Ker arranges the fragments in the order of the dates of the accounts.

Note

This record describes the fragments in MS 219, retaining Ker's numbering of the constituent pieces but arranging them in the volume's order of pagination. This volume contains fragments VI-VIII, X, XII-XVII.

Note

See Ker as cited below for additional details and references, and for the dates of the account books as marked on the fragments.

Note

MS 219, pp. 1-14 (fragment XIII): Three bifolia and a singleton (pp. 1,2) of a copy of Revelationes Sanctae Birgittae written in England in the second half of the 15th century. Text printed in 1492 and later. -- Written space 198 x 145 mm. 41-43 long lines. No visible ruling. Written in a secretary hand influenced by anglicana. 2-line blue initials with red ornament.

Note

MS 219, pp. 15-18 (fragment XII): Bifolium of a medical manuscript written in England in the mid-13th century. Text divided into Tractatus, Doctrinae, and Capitula, in the same way as the Chirurgia of Guy de Chauliac, but the text is different. Tr. 2, Doctr. 2, Cap. 4 is 'De apostemate quod fit in radice anis. Apostema quod fit ...' and Cap. 6 is 'De apostemate sub titillico'. Two consecutive leaves numbered 34 and 35. -- Written space 205 x 145 mm. Two columns of 47 lines. Central bifolium of a quire. Written in current anglicana. 2-line blue initials with red ornament.

Note

MS 219, pp. 19-29 and 55-70 (fragment VIII): Six bifolia of a copy of Aquinas, De veritate, written in England in the late 13th century, containing fragments of questions 1-3, 15-16, 18-19, 29. The right order of the pages is 59-70. 55-58, 19-26; a medieval foliation shows that pp. 59-70 were ff. 2, 5-8, 11 and that pp. 19-22 were ff. 119-120 of the original manuscript; by calculation, pp. 55-58 were ff. 14 and 21. Page 26 contains the last words of the text 'non sufficienter' followed by a numbered table of contents, presumably corresponding to numbers in the margin of the text. -- Written space 250 x 155 mm. Two columns of 50 lines. Quires inferred to be in twelves: fragment contains 1²,⁵-⁸,¹¹ 2³,¹⁰ 10¹,¹² and the central bifolium of the last quire. 2-line initials in blue or red with ornament of the other colour. Secundo folio: et falsum 'nisi' in mente.

Note

MS 219, pp. 27-50 (fragment X): Six bifolia of Eton College MS 116 (q.v.) containing parts or all of sections 455-458, 466-468, 479-483, 490-497, 533-538, 549-557, 560-564, and 572-576 of the Summa theologica of St Thomas Aquinas, written probably in England in the late 13th/early 14th century.

Note

MS 219, pp. 71-78 (fragment XV): Two bifolia of the Historia scholastica of Petrus Comestor removed from quire 12 of Eton College MS 125 (q.v.), written probably in France in the late 12th century.

Note

MS 219, pp. 79-86 (fragment VI): Two bifolia of a commentary on the Apocalypse (?) written in England in the early 15th century. -- Written space 272 x 170 mm. Two columns of 57-59 lines. Written in a secretary hand.

Note

MS 219, pp. 87-90 (fragment XVII): Bifolium of a copy of Codex Justiniani, written probably in Italian in the late 12th/early 13th century. Fragment contains book 1, tit. 48-51 and book 2, tit. 4-6, with many early marginalia. -- Written space 250 x 135 mm. Two columns of 51 lines.

Note

MS 219, pp. 91-118 (fragment XIV): Seven bifolia of a copy of 1,2 Chronicles with gloss, written in England in the 13th century. Text runs with gaps from 'tempore percussit dauid' (1 Chronicles 18:3) to 'et offerentur' (2 Chronicles 35:12). Text takes up most of the page with scanty gloss fitted in beside it in smaller writing. Fragment probably comprises leaves 1,2,4,5,8,9,11,12 of one quire, two bifolia of a second quire and one bifolium of a third. -- Written space 220 mm high. -- Marginalia by Robert Elyot (d. 1499), vice provost of Eton.

Note

MS 219, pp. 119-122 (fragment VII): Bifolium of theological distinctions, letter S, written in England in the second half of the 14th century, including pieces "De spiritu sanctu 156" and "De superbia 157" (running titles in red on rectos). -- Written space 267 x 150 mm. Two columns of 43 lines. Written in a large square textura; 2-line blue initials with red ornament.
