Excusum Londini : In ædibus Henrici Bynnemani typographi, Anno salutis humanæ M. D. LXXXIIII. [1584]
[1716] p. ; 31 cm. (fol.)
Signatures: [paragraph]⁶ (A-(5Y⁶ (6A-(6V⁶ 7A-7M⁶.
The imprint is taken from the colophon (on leaf Mmmmmm5 verso). The title-page imprint reads: Impressum Londini. 1584. STC attributes the printing to Henry Denham. Since the book was printed after Bynneman died in 1583 the work was presumably undertaken by his heirs and Denham, for (possibly also by) Ralph Newberry (with whom Bynneman often worked; the book is entered to Denham and Newberry in the Stationers' index, with the date 30 December 1584).
The first and final leaves are blank.
In this edition, the title-page bears a woodcut device of a chained bear, standing upright; line 12 of the title ends "cogni-". In another edition (ESTC S469087), the title page device is McKerrow 195 (a framed Anchor with "Anchora spei") and line 12 of the title ends "cog-".
Some copies, including one at Cambridge University Library, have a type-facsimile title page dated 1584, but with line 2 beginning "Romanæ Britannicæ", while the original title page has "Romanæ & Britannicæ"; it was apparently printed in London after 1705. In these copies, the sheets are a mixture of STC 5687 and 5688, with a few (e.g. pages 1 and 6) in a setting different from either. Some copies, including one at St Catharine's College, Oxford, have a different type-facsimile title page, also dated 1584 but bearing the anchor device (McKerrow, "Printers' and publishers' devices in England & Scotland 1485-1640", 195) and having on the verso the address "Cooperus lectori", which appears there in STC 5688 but not in 5689 or on the other facsimile title pages; it was apparently printed in London, ca. 1680. The sheets are STC 5688, with readings "Annales" and "Ter." (cf. STC).
Woodcut tailpieces and initials; text on two columns.

Bookplate of Eton college of front pastedown.
Signature of William Hodges twice on t.p. and date 'January 18 anno 1613 his book'; crossed out; on the right side of the printer's device 'his book anno 1613' and below 'not his book anno domini 1613'. Possibly William Hodges (-1676)?
Signature of James Hodges on t.p. and date Junii 15 1648, crossed out. On the left side of the printer's device 'Jacobus Hodges'.
A few ms annotations on margins partially trimmed on f. [paragraph]4 verso and 7h2 verso.
Mid-17th century English calf binding; frame of blind double fillet with additional vertical lines tooled parallel to the spine and small flowers at the corners; five raised bands with blind fillets; gold titling on spine; rebacked by Richard Day with the addition of two front and back flyleaves; blue coloured edges.
Imperfect: wanting the first and final leaves, blank.
Edition with original title page; woodcut device of a chained bear on t.p., standing upright; line 12 of the title ends "cogni-".
Old repair with large slip of paper partially covers the colophon. Other old repairs on a few pages of the book.
