The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech, and owing to Dryden's illness, the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne.
Following imprint statement on title-page: "Where Compleat Sets of Mr. Dryden's Works, in Four Volumes, are to be Sold. The Plays being put in the order they were Written."
Quotation from Juvenal, Satire 4, on title-page: "His Armis, illâ quoque tutus in aulâ."
Preliminary matter includes Dryden's Epistle Dedicatory to the Earl of Rochester, and the Preface, containing the poem 'To Mr. Dryden, on his Cleomenes' by 'a young Gentleman, under Twenty Years of Age' named Theophilus Parsons.
