On 11 January 1642, following an attempt by the king to seize Hull and its magazine, the Commons ordered Hotham to secure the town using the trained bands, though it was actually his son, Captain John Hotham, who carried out this order. Hotham senior did not assume his command as the town's parliamentary governor until mid-March--DNB.
