18th-century partially speckled brown ?sheepskin over pasteboard. Covers decorated with blind double fillets as well as as rolls and tools in a diced panel. Spine with four raised bands; gilt titling over red label ("Johnson plays", now almost completely faded). Textblock rounded and sprinkled red. Pastedowns of laid undecorated paper; no flyleaves.
Ms. modern note on front pastedown. Compton's bookplate glued over it.
