Binding
(Copy 1) 17th-century sprinkled mid-brown calf over pasteboard bound in England; rebacked and repaired in the 19th century. On both covers, a gilt-stamped armorial centrepiece of Sir Edward Dering (1598-1644); outer border of triple fillets (blind-gilt-blind); board edges tooled with a single blind fillet. Spine rebacked with a lighter leather and five raised bands, tooled aside with thick and thin gilt fillets; onlaid spine label (gilt titling over brown ?morocco); endbands of plain thread. Textblock sprinkled red. Endpapers comprising marbled paper (pastedown and flyleaf) and flyleaves (three upper, five lower; the latter possibly inserted complete when rebound), mostly of wove paper contemporary with rebinding.

(Copy 2) 20th-century reversed beige calfskin over mill/pasteboards by R.L. Day. Covers decorated with black rolls forming a border an a panel, connected at the corners; same roll on turn-ins. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with same black roll and gilt titling over black label ("A display of heraldrie"; "Gvillim" - the latter in black with no label). Textblock trimmed. Endpapers of undecorated paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.

(Copy 3) ?17th-century speckled calfskin over pasteboards. Covers decorated with double blind fillets to form a border; blind fillet on board edges. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with blind fillets and gilt titling over dark red morocco label ("Gvillim's heraldrie"). Textlock trimmed and dyed red. Endpapers of undecorated laid paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.

(Copy 1) With hand-coloured armorials. Ms. annotations and underlinings in black and red ink by Sir Edward Dering 1598-1644) throughout. Annotations in a modern hand, signed 'W.H.S.', on fourth flyleaf recto: details on French armorials drawn from Du Moulin's 'Histoire generale de Normandie' (1631), with drawnings of armorials. On the verso: drawings and notes "Copied from the monument erected to my great, great, grandfather in Finglase [sic] church yard, County Dublin"; drawings of the arms of Pocklington (impaled with Hatton) and Dring (impaled with Uniacke). On title page: "Full of odd information and entertainment of a peculiar kind". Ms. note on first upper flyleaf verso in a 20th century hand: "2nd Ed. Arms emblazoned / MS Index inserted + marginal notes / Arms of Sir Edward Dering". Ms. ?shelfmark in ?Dering's hand at head of title-page recto: "14 16". Ms. annotations in at least one ?19th-century hand (similar to those on flyleaves) throughout. Ms. corrections to pagination errors. ECL previous shelfmark: DDk.4.4.
