"Of the colours of good and evil" has separate pagination, and divisional title on M5v. "The wisdom of the ancients. .. Done into English by Sir Arthur Gorges, Knight", a translation of "De sapientia veterum", has separate pagination and title page lacking names in the imprint. Register is continuous throughout.

?Early-twentieth century light brown leather. On both covers, a blind-tooled frame comprising of a ringlet roll, with foliate stamps at outer corners; outer border of blind triple fillets; narrow squares, board edges and turn-ins tooled with a hatcheting-effect roll. Spine with transverse impressions of a larger ringlet roll, blind fillets, and gilt titling ("Bacon's essays" / "London 1696."). Textblok trimmed and gilt. Endpapers comprising marbled paper (pastedown and flyleaf) and 19th/20th century laid paper (flyleaf).

Imperfect: wanting the last three leaves of table of contents and advertisements; one leaf of the table (signature Z) misbound after X8.
