Late 19th or early 20th century three-quarter sand-grain cloth with mauve patterned cloth over millboard; case binding. On both covers, the darker cloth outlined with blind double fillets; covers otherwise undecorated; medium sqaures. Spine rounded (?leather), with six false bands (three apiece near head and tail), with small gilt ornaments between; gilt titling ("Mysterious mother - Walpole. 1791"). Textblock trimmed and gilt at head-edge (but with several deckle edges?). Endpapers comprising of plain white wove paper (pastedown and flyleaves).
Manuscript note in a 20th century hand, on a square of paper tipped in to first flyleaf recto: remarks on the sale catalogue of the library of George [unread]; reference to a book titled Byshop's Beautiful Blossoms which discusses Walpole's writing of The Mysterious Mother.
