Binding

19th century smooth light-brown calf over ?millboard, sewn on three recessed supports. On upper cover, a gilt-stamped armorial centrepiece of George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833) (see British Armorial Bindings, Leverson-Gower, George Granville, stamp 05) with an outer border of blind double fillets; wide squares, board edges tooled with an gilt ornamental roll, turn-ins with a blind roll. Spine rounded with five false bands, tooled over with a gilt dotted roll and aside with gilt fillets; the same at head and tail; gilt tilting ("Hoyland on the Gypsies" over a red morocco label) in second panel, and date "1816" at tail; ?false endbands of alternating black and brown thread. Textblock trimmed and marbled. Endpapers comprising marbled paper to match the textblock edges (pastedown and flyleaf) and white paper (flyleaf).
