Booklabel of Clement James Mellish Adie (1876-1954), chief Warden at Eton College, on upper pastedown of each volume (bookplate in the first volume partially removed).
Binding
Late 18th-century tree calf over millboard or pasteboard, sewn on four recesseed cord supports; bound in England. Both covers undecorated; wide squares, the board edges tooled with a gilt roll of alternating full and dotted diagonal lines. Spine smooth and slightly rounded, divided into six panels by roll of vertical lines bordered by transverse fillets; the panels gilt with foliate centrepieces and cornerpieces; two foliate-ornamental rolls at tail; second compartment with spine label (gilt titling over red morocco onlay: "Spec=tator", fourth panel with vol. number (black morocco onlay with central oval of inlaid red morocco containing gilt roman numeral, outlined by an arrow-head like tool, with foliate cornerpiecces to onlay); endbands of alternating brown and white thread. Textblock trimmed and ?undecorated. Endpapers comprising leaves of plain laid paper (pastedown and two flyleaves).
