Booklabel of Clement James Mellish Adie (1876-1954), chief Warden at Eton College, on upper pastedown.
Mid to late 18th-century light brown calf over pasteboard or millboard. Both covers undecorated; narrow squares, board edges tooled with a blind ornamental roll (faded). Spine slightly rounded, with five raised bands (two false?) tooled aside with single gilt fillets; second panel with spine label (gilt titling over red morocco onlay: "Polnitz' memoirs"), with vol. no in third panel (see additional note below); endband of alternating blue and plain thread. Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red. Endpapers comprised of leaves of plain laid paper (pastedown and two flyleaves).
Volume numbers tooled in gilt on spine are continuous from these two vols. of this second edition (vols. 1-2) to two vols. of an earlier edition (vols 3-4) at shelfmark Em.8.17 -18. Moreover, these are bound identically; despite comprising a mix of two editions, they evidently were bound to be part of a set by a previous owner.
