[16], 276; [6], 268, 10, 149-324 p., [3] leaves of plates : ill. (ports.) ; 17 cm. (8vo)
Signatures: A-S⁸ T², ²A-R⁸ ²S⁶, ³S-Z⁸ Aa-Ee⁸.
The portrait frontispiece of Charles I (plate), signed "Guil. Marshall delinea: et sculpsit", represents Charles kneeling, with a crown of thorns in his right hand (Madan frontis. 3).
Title-page row of 4 type ornaments; title of "[Eikōn basilikē]" within single rule and row of type ornaments border and with a title-page vignette of royals arms;
The imprint is false; in fact printed in 1651 in London by W. DuGard for Frances Eglesfield (see Madan 24:first issue and Wing).
Head- and tail- pieces; initials.
The folded plate, bound in front of "Eikōn basilikē", is signed: "Guil. Marshall sculpsit" and represents Charles with the crown of thorns in his right hand, with "The explanation of the embleme" below.
"Eikōn basilikē. The pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in his solitudes and sufferings" has separate title-page date 1648 (on leaf ²A1 recto); pagination and register are separate. "Praiers, used by His Majestie in the time of his sufferings" has caption title (on leaf ²S2 recto) and separate pagination; register is continuous.
Includes a portrait of Charles II at the age of 19, facing p. 231 of "Eikōn basilikē" (p. 231 bearing heading "27. To the Prince of Wales.").
Authorship of the Eikōn basilikē was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king.
The contents of the pages following the "Eikōn basilikē" are: page no.1-6: Prayers; page no.7: a letter; page no.[8-9]: Relations; page no.10: Epitaph, with Greek couplet below followed by "Finis.". According to Madan 24:first issue, these are followed by 4 pages numbered 5-8 or 7-10 bearing Reasons (not included in Almack 22). Pages 149-324 at end are "the Newcastle Papers" (Almack 22).
Almack says: "The 'Eikon' and Prayers do not properly belong to this edition [Almack 22] of the 'Reliquae'", but he includes them in his report. Madan 24 includes only the "Eikon" ([6], 268), and the 10 following pages, plus the pages numbered 5-8 or 7-10.
First word of line 18 on title-page verso: "PART". (cf. ESTC R21104: "PRAT'".)
