Authorship of the Eikōn basilikē was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king.
First two words of title in Greek characters.
Title page is on A2r, A1 bears a poem signed F.N.G.
Title page in red and black, within double rule border with ornamental type within.
Royal coat of arms on t.p.
"Apophthegmata aurea, regia, Carolina" has a separate dated title page with imprint "London, printed by William Du-gard for Francis Eglesfield", separate pagination and register.

19th-century armorial bookplate of Eton College Library on upper pastedown; manuscript list of contents in a 19th- or early 20th-century hand on upper flyleaf verso with previous shelfmark in a later hand; bibliographical details on lower flyleaf recto.
Sammelband. ?Late 17th-century smooth brown calf, sewn on three recessed supports; rebacked (20th century). On both covers, an outer border of gilt double fillets, with small gilt ornamental cornerpieces; medium squares, the board edges tooled with a gilt dotted fillet. Spine flat, divided into seven panels by transverse gilt fillets; second through fourth panels with gilt lettering ("Reliquiae sacrae" / "Pourtraicture" / Apophthegmata aurea &c."), fifth and sixth with a gilt ornamental centrepiece and cornerpiece design, panels at head and tail with similar tooling; endbands replaced during rebacking. Endpapers comprising green marbled paper (pastedown and flyleaf), orange cloth to interior gutter (likely inserted during rebacking). Traces of clasps (missing).
