A series of three suites of prints presenting engravings produced between 1646 and 1776. Bound around 1820, the date of the watermark of the paper of this volume which has been used as post quem date for when it was printed.
First suite: [Twelve original views in Italy] - There is no title page or title plate. The title and imprint given here are taken from the entry in the NAL catalogue. All plates are signed as drawn by R. Wilson, and as engraved by M. Rooker, E. Rooker, Jas. Gandon, W. Hodges or Jos. Farington. None carries a publisher's imprint. The plates are all views, captioned as follows: [1] Temple of Peace; [2] Circus of Caracalla; [3] Bath's of Dioclesian; [4] Torre Delle Grotte near Naples; [5] Banks of the Tiber; [6] Temple of Romulus and Remus; [7] Bridge of Augustus at Rimini; [8] In the Strada Nomentana; [9] Castle of Ischia; [10] Pompey's Bridge at Terni; [11] In the Villa Adriana; [12] Villa of Mæcenas at Tivoli. -- from RA record.
Second suite: engravings of churches, measuring 253 x 123 mm. The subject of each is noted at the bottom of the plate in Italian, French and Latin; it is also noted in English at the top, which is likely a later addition. They are numbered 1-12, and number 7 displays a cartouche with title "Views of remarkable places in & about Rome".
Third suite: engravings of Italian city views drawn by Israel Silvestre and published (sometimes drawn) by Pierre Mariette, measuring 248 x 108 mm. The subject of each is noted at the bottom of each plate in Italian and French, artists' signatures in Latin. They are numbered 1-12.
Fourth suite: engravings Israel Silvestre published by Pierre Mariette, measuring 200 x 115 mm. Two per plate. The first plate of the series is duplicate. The subject of each is noted at the bottom of each engraving in French. They are numbered 3-12.
Fifth suite: engravings of views of Rome, some of which were dran by Silevstre and others by Pierre Mariette, measuring 93 x 127 mm. Mariette was also the publisher. Two per plate. The subject of each is noted at the bottom of each engraving in French or Italian, artist's signature in Latin. They are numbered 1-12.
Sixth suite: engravings of views of Paris by Israel Silvestre and published by Pierre Mariette, measuring 118 x 160 mm. Two per plate. The subject of each is noted at the bottom of each engraving in French. They numbered 1-6.
Ex dono label of Joseph Frederick Burrell, dated 1983, on front pastedown.
Ms. signature on first plate: "W. T. Drake [...] 1822". Possibily Etonian William Tyrwhitt (d. 1849).
19th-century quarter-bound calfskin and marbled paper over mill/pasteboards. Coveres not additionally decorated. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with gilt dotted roll, fillets, tools and titling ("Silvesters views"). Textblock trimmed and marbled. Endpapers of marbled (pastedowns and facing flyleaves) and undecorated wove paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.
The paper used in the volume has a watermark reading "1820".
