(Copy 1) Armorial bookplate, undated, of J. M. Paget with motto "book openeth book" on front pastedown. Bookseller's ticket on front pastedown: "T. Moule, 34 Duke St[ree]t Grosvenor Square"; the ms. note on front flyleaf verso suggests this copy was sold in October 1817. Ex dono label of Joseph Frederick Burrell, dated 1983, on front flyleaf.

Binding

(Copy 1) 18th-century quarter-bound calfskin and marbled paper over pasteboards. Spine with four raised bands, decorated with blind roll, tools and gilt titling ("Original & growth of heraldry"; "By Philipot 1672"). Textblock trimmed and dyed red (faded). Endpapers of brown (pastedowns and facing flyleaves) and undecorated paper; three flyleaves at both ends of the textblock (number 3 at the front has been ripped off).

Binding

(Copy 2) ?18th-century ?sheepskin over pasteboards. Covers decorated with double blind fillets to form a border. Spine flat and undecorated. Textblock trimmed and marbled; includes ms. inscription "Heraldry". Endpapers of undecorated laid paper; one flyleaf at the upper end of the textblock, two at the lower end; no pastedown at either end.

Copy-specific note

(Copy 1) Loose ms. note about "The Gentleman's calling", dated 7 May 1954. Presumably inserted in this volume by mistake. Some 17th-century interlinear ms. annotations.
