?18th-century mottled calfskin over woodboards. Covers decorated with gilt rolls on board edges. Spine with seven sewing supports, decorated with gilt tools and titling ("Recherche de la noblesse par Cumartin"). Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red. Endpapers of undecorated paper; two flyleaves at the upper end of the textblock, three at the lower end.
?18th-century pencil ms. note at the bottom of title page: "Charles d. Hozier Juge et General des Armes & Blazon de France".
Loose leaf with part printed part ms. permission for Arthur R. Ferrer to travel on the continent on behalf of Edward Henry Stanley, Earl of Derby, found at the upper end of the textblock of v.1 and dated 27 December 1877.
The coats of arms have been handpainted; some illustrations have been added with watercolour.
Loose leaf between pp. [2]-[3] with ms. genealogy and notes -- undated but possibly 19th century.
