Origin: France.
Provenance: Ker suggests that the letters inscribed on a blue shield at the foot of ff. 25r, 33r, 80r may represent an A and ?R; however, they look more like alpha fused with omega. Ms. note on front pastedown: "may have belonged to Margaret of Anjou | Francis Fry | Bristol", accompanied by catalogue sale entry; the catalogue says this is from the collection of "Mr Scarisbrick". Bookplate of John Hely-Hutchinson on recto of front flyleaf (bought from Maggs in November 1946); ex dono dated 30th March 1950 on verso. Ms. notes on last rear flyleaf: "Nº 100 De la bibliotheque de feu Mr de foille achetee en 1796 par B... | ancien [?] et homme de lettres". Cut-outs from library sales from 1901 and 1906 glued to rear pastedown.
Late 16th-century dark brown calfskin over pasteboards, probably made around 1580 (Hobson). Covers decorated with blind double fillets to form a border, as well as Oiseau passant, Papillon, and Grande marguerite stamps (Hobson/Ker). Spine flat, decorated with similar blind stamps. Textblock trimmed. Endpapers of undecorated vellum; one flyleaf at the upper end of the textblock, four at the lower end.
