Most of the text is written in English, with some quotes in French, Latin, and Greek.
Pages i-iv are printed; the rest are blank leaves that Macready numerated and, for the most part, filled with text.
Title page verso: "T. Miller, Printer, Noble-street, Cheapside.".
The last twelves leaves are a blank alphabetical index which was partially filled by Macready.

19th-century quarter-bound red morocco and marbled paper over paste/millboards. Covers undecorated. Spine decorated with blind fillets and gilt titling ("Common place book"). Textblock trimmed and marbled. Endpapers of marbled (pastedowns and facing flyleaves) and undecorated paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.
Additional material: two items inserted at the front of the textblock, now removed and put in an envelope shelved next to the book. The first item is a letter (2 sheets) from W.C. Macready to his son, addressed Willie, and dated May 11th 1844 in New York U.S.. The second item is a ms. note reading "July. 10. 1848. Benefit by command Henry viii & jealous wife" (1 sheet) which encloses newspaper cut-outs of reviews of Macready's work.
