The volumes are stored in a 19th-century, custom-made lacquer wood box (catalogue reference: FDA-A.304-2013).
None of the volumes present decoration.
In absence of colophons or decorations the date range has been tentatively assigned as being late 19th-early 20th century.
Scope and content: Nijuichidaishū means "Collection of 21 reigns". It is an anthology of a type of Japanese poetry called waka, which was commissioned by different emperors between the 10th and 15th centuries.
Donated to Eton College by the Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito (1901-1989), later Emperor Showa, after his visit to Eton in May 1921. It arrived in August 1925 through the Japanese Embassy.
