Presentation copy from the author to Ivor Gurney dated November 1917, with long inscription to Gurney: "To you - poet and musician - who have kept the melodies of sound, colour and thought alive despite the roar of the Guns ... we were introduced to one-another by wounds ...". Barnett was Chaplain to the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour, where Gurney resided from 25 September to 7 November 1917.
Loosley inserted calling card of the Rev. T. Ratcliffe Burnett, inscribed in ink "The ever open door to you".
Binding leaf preceding half title contains autograph poem "The peat reek" by Barnett dated Morar, August 1915; poems on pp. 100, 156 and 199 of the text initialled by Barnett.
