Mise-en-page: verso of pages usually include translated text in English, while facing rectos are divided into two columns with individual foreign words on the left and their translation on the right.
Decoration: none.
Handwriting: Robert Neeham Cust's signature on the first volume suggests they are personal notebooks, handwritten by him.
Contents: English translations on verso of pages, glossary on rectos. Vol. 1: 9th book of Anvar-i Suhaili -- Vol. 2: Persian exercises, dated 1842 -- Vol. 3: Arabic exercises, February-June 1841 -- Vol. 4: "discussion between animals and men" an essay in English.

Origin: the dates written in the notebooks suggest they were written when Cust was attending the East India Company's college at Haileybury, where he studied Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, and Hindustani.
Provenance: presented to ECL in 1932, based on ms. note on box where they are housed.
19th-century green or red morocco over cardboard. Covers undecorated. Ms. "title" of each volume written on upper cover in black ink. Textblock trimmed and marbled. No endleaves.
